He was a fierce screen presence! I recently saw "Pickup on South Street" and was delighted at how fearlessly he chewed the scenery. Purely a force of nature in some of his films... raw energy. I miss him already.

    Any fans of "Panic in the Streets" out there? Just watched the DVD this weekend, and enjoyed it immensely. Not only was Widmark great, but this was one of the finer, more nuanced villain roles for Jack Palance. Elia Kazan may have not had any personal integrity, but he sure was masterful director... well able to draw out sharp performances from his actors.
