I just saw Night of the Hunter on TCM the other night. Robert Osborne said it was originally panned by the critics and audiences, however it has lately seen a resurgence of appreciation, but I am not so sure I don't agree with the original critics. I found it strange, very oddly directed by Charles Laughton, and somewhat like a creepy fairy tale. What do others think ?

  • creepy fairytale sums it up!! yes, a wild, weird noir film of sorts! I haven't seen it in ages, but will netflix it now, thanks!
    • Part of what was so freaky about it was that Lillian Gish's nice lady character was in her own way as creepy as Robert Mitchum's. It's as if there was no space at all for those poor kids. Deeply disturbing, and weirdly original.
      • Very, very Southern and very, very gothic.

        << Lillian Gish's nice lady character >>

Is practically a Back Home archetype, as is everyone else in that movie. I don't see the "creepy," though I'm sure a look at Davis Grubb's original novel would yield insights.
        • Beautifully photographed.

I've always found Charles Laughton oddly creepy. I didn't know he directed this, but the tone of the film makes sense now in a way it didn't before.

Yes, Charles laughton directed it. According to what I've read this was the only film he directed, however he received such bad reviews at the time he never directed another. Many years later film critics gave his effort better credibility and some even consider the film in the top 100. I don't agree and still think is was strangly directed and somewhat weird. The editor should be blamed for some of the weirdness for some of the strangest cuts I've seen.
          • James Wong Howe did the photography IIRC.

Loved the movie when I saw it on tv as a kid. I remembered I was scared enough to keep a pillow in front of me. lol

The "LOVE" and "HATE" tattoos on the back of his fingers -- who could ever forget those messages?
